Are California pears a fall fruit?
Contrary to popular belief, California pears are in season and in our stores starting in the summer and running through autumn.
Can I control how fast my pears ripen?
Pears are picked when they’re still firm and crunchy. If you prefer your pears a little softer, sweeter and juicier, simply leave them out at room temperature. Once they’re at your desired level of ripeness, you can store them in the fridge for a few days to slow down the ripening process until you’re ready to use them.
How do I know when my pears are ripe?
Bartletts ripen like bananas, going from green to yellow. For other types of pears, simply give it a gentle squeeze and you should be able feel when the flesh starts to give slightly.
What are some good ways to eat pears raw?
Along with eating out of hand as a daily snack, pears are also great for pairing (see what we did there?) with your favorite brie or blue cheese, or slicing and adding on top of salads.
Are pears good for cooking?
You bet! From baking in a galette to making a flavorful pear chutney or even adding to a savory dish, pears are fantastic in all sorts of recipes!
