Ground turkey and chicken are great alternatives to the traditional all-beef burger. Flavors of chili powder, cumin, and dried oregano in the patty mixture add a little Tex-Mex flair to the burger. Add crispy golden onion rings, smoked cheddar and Bar-B-Cue Sauce and you'll find yourself singing ol' cowboy songs.
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ pounds ground turkey
- 1 egg
- ½ cup panko
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- ⅓ pound smoked cheddar, cut into 12 equal slices
- 8* onion rings
- ½ cup Mesquite Bar-B-Cue Sauce
- 4 leaves butter (bibb) lettuce
- 4 sesame seed buns
Preparation
Combine turkey, egg, panko, and seasonings together in a bowl; mix well. Form mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
Heat oil in cast iron or stainless steel skillet over medium heat. Cook burgers 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove from pan, lay 3 slices of cheese across each patty. Assemble burgers on buns starting with a leaf of butter lettuce, a turkey burger, two onion rings each and 2 tablespoons of Bar-B-Cue Sauce.
Glossary:
- oregano
-
Is a perennial of the mint family and is believed to be native to the Mediterranean region. It is closely related to marjoram and it often used as a substitute for marjoram in recipes as it is more readily available in markets. There are two strains of oregano - Mediterranean (Greek) and Mexican. The Mediterranean strain is a little more delicate in flavor than its pungent cousin from Mexico.
Use fresh or dried in sauces (such as Spaghetti and barbecue), on grilled or stewed vegetables (zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes) or with meats (hamburger, meatloaf, stews, and sausages).
- sesame seed
-
Also known as “benne”, is the seed of a sturdy annual which attains a height of approximately 2 feet. Sesame does not readily lend itself to any of the categories in the family of spices. It lacks the aromatic qualities of its cousins and its claim to distinction is in its sweet, "nutty" flavor.
Aside from its common uses in appetizers, breads, meats, seafood, and vegetables, this easily cultivated seed yields a fine cooking oil which has been, and continues to be, an important diet item in many parts of the world. Tahini, a primary component of hummus, is made from toasted sesame seeds and oil ground together.
